South Island Public Service District Provides Update on Water Tower Projects

Project Details:

South Island Public Service District (PSD) owns 2 elevated water tanks within our community. One tower abuts Tower Beach, and the 2nd is near the intersection of Lighthouse Road and Plantation Drive. South Island PSD is currently working toward repainting both towers inside and out.

Tower Beach Water Tower Update:

Work first began in late September to prepare for the sandblasting and painting of the Tower Beach water tower. All 4 of the cellular antennas transmitting from this water tower (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint) were moved to a temporary monopole that was designed, approved and constructed by the cellular carriers.

Rain, high humidity and low temperatures have delayed the actual painting of the towers which requires very specific weather conditions. South Island PSD’s completion date for the repainting at the Tower Beach location is the end of January.

Once the painting is complete at the Tower Beach location, the cellular antennas will be moved back to the top of the water tower one by one. This process averages 1-2 weeks per provider.

Lighthouse Road and Plantation Drive Water Tower Update:

The antennas of the 3 carriers located at the Lighthouse Road and Plantation Drive water tower (AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile) have been moved to a nearby monopole. The repainting of this water tower will begin when the contractors complete the painting at the Tower Beach location. South Island PSD anticipates the painting of the Lighthouse Road/Plantation Drive water tower will be completed by the end of March 2019, weather permitting.

The antennas will then be reinstalled on this water tower, requiring the same 1-2 week per provider time frame as the Tower Beach location.

Cell Phone Coverage Issues?

Due to this project, some owners have experienced a reduction of their usual cell phone coverage. All of the providers involved have agreed to this project and are therefore aware that coverage issues may occur. Please contact your cell phone provider directly to report specific issues related to your cell phone coverage.

Project Questions?

For general questions about the repainting projects, please contact South Island Public Service District at (843)785-6224.

Sea Pines CSA will continue to provide updates as the projects progress. While work is ongoing, we urge you to use caution in these areas.
