Snake Safety Reminder

As we enjoy our beautiful Lowcountry environment, it’s important to stay aware of our native snake population. While most snakes are harmless and beneficial to our ecosystem, below are some key safety tips to keep in mind this time of year:

  • If you are out at night, always use a flashlight, because most snakes are active on warm nights. Shine before your step.
  • Never pick up or attempt to move a snake.
  • Don’t put your hands or feet in places where you can’t see.
  • Wear leather gloves if you have to handle debris, logs, rocks and other objects where a snake could be hiding.
  • Wear high boots, gaiters and thick pants when working or walking in grassy or wooded areas.
  • Remove piles of brush and leaves well away from walkways and play areas.

Common Snakes in Our Area:

  • Non-venomous: Yellow rat snakes, king snakes, corn snakes, and garter snakes.
  • Venomous: Copperheads are the most commonly encountered. Less frequently seen venomous species are Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes, cottonmouths (water moccasins), and coral snakes. For more information on venomous snakes in South Carolina click here.

Charlie Miner Memorial Dedication Ceremony

On September 10, 2025, a heartfelt memorial dedication ceremony honoring the late Charles “Charlie” Miner took place at Fish Island in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. The ceremony featured the unveiling of a commemorative wooden bench and memorial sign recognizing Charlie’s exceptional commitment to preserving our community’s natural treasure. Memorial tribute remarks were given by Sea Pines CSA’s Board Chair David Ellis, Steve Birdwell, President of The Sea Pines Resort, and Curtis Miner, Charlie’s eldest son.

The ceremony maintained a happy and peaceful atmosphere throughout, reflecting the joy Charlie found in nature and the positive impact he had on all who knew him. The memorial bench will serve as a lasting reminder of his legacy and provide a place for future visitors to rest and appreciate the natural beauty Charlie worked so hard to preserve.
