Hurricane Erin Advisory, Wednesday, August 20, 2025

From The National Weather Service Charleston Office: Dangerous Surf, Rip Currents, and Coastal Flooding Expected

Hurricane Erin will pass well offshore today, producing large swells that will continue to create dangerous surf conditions and minor to moderate beach erosion. Coastal flooding will also occur through the end of the week.

Hazards & Impacts:

  • High Surf: Breaking waves are forecast to build to 6 feet or higher, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.
  • Rip Currents: A high risk of strong and frequent rip currents will exist at all area beaches.
    • Shore Beach Service has issued a No Swimming Advisory for Hilton Head Island beaches through today, August 20. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water.
  • Beach Erosion: The period of greatest concern is during the Wednesday evening high tide cycle. The combination of large waves and elevated water levels is expected to cause significant wave runup to the dune line, resulting in beach erosion. The most impactful conditions are forecast from 5 PM to 9 PM EDT.
  • Coastal Flooding: Minor to moderate coastal flooding is expected with this evening’s high tide cycle and will remain elevated through the end of the week. Highest tide levels are expected this evening.
