The American Alligator is native to coastal plains from Texas to North Carolina and can be found in rivers, swamps, lakes, creeks, ditches, and tidal areas. South Carolina alligator populations were decimated in the 50's and 60's but have since recovered. The recovery has gone so well that in 1988 the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources initiated a nuisance management program that continues to this day.
Alligators are wild animals and should never be approached. Alligators eat fish, birds, turtles, and other small to mid-sized mammals. Feeding or harassing alligators is illegal and can result in fines and/or imprisonment. Alligators are normally elusive; however, when fed they lose their fear of humans and can present safety issues. Unfortunately, these dangerous or nuisance alligators must be removed and destroyed. Alligators play an invaluable role in our local ecosystem and should be respected, not feared and should always be admired from a distance. If you observe anyone feeding/harassing alligators or find an alligator you believe is behaving in an unnatural way please call Sea Pines Security @ 843-671-7170.
