Lights Out for the Turtles - Leggerhead Nests Set Record!

Loggerhead sea turtles nest on the beaches of Hilton Head Island between May and August. An 11-year-old sea turtle nesting record has been broken as nest nop. 222 for 2010 was spotted by turtle enthusiasts on July 26 (click here for more information).

For each 10,000 hatchlings, it is estimated tht only one survives to adulthood.  Artificial lighting plays a role, causing hatchlings to become disoriented and actually discouraging females from nesting.   The Town of Hilton Head Island requires that lights on structures visible from the beach be shielded or turned off after 10 p.m. from May 1 to October 31Click here for more information and to find out what else you can do to help.
